Housing and Residence Life FAQs

  1. How do I apply for housing?

    In order to apply for housing, you need to be accepted at Savannah State University and you will have to fill out a housing application and contract and send it in with the non-refundable application fee. You may also request your application be mailed to you by phoning (912) 358-3132.

    NO ROOM ASSIGNMENT WILL BE MADE WITHOUT THE APPLICATION FEE .

  2. Are students required to live on campus?

    Freshmen from outside the Chatham County area are expected, but not required, to reside in the residence halls of Savannah State University.

  3. Are students required to be on the meal plan?

    Freshmen living in the traditional residence halls are required to be on the 20 meals per week meal plan. Upper class students living on campus have the choice between 20 meals per week and 14 (200 dining dollars) meals per week. There are several different meal plans available for commuter students.   4. How much does housing cost?

    The cost of housing differs between the residential facilities and the type. Please look up our fee schedule for the upcoming semester.

  5. Can I see a room?

    Rooms are set up for viewing during special events like "High School Visitation Day" and upon special request to the Office of Admissions. To schedule a tour, please call (800) 358-4778. More information on specific student housing.

  6. Do the rooms have cable TV?

    Yes, every residence hall has basic cable.

  7. Do I need a telephone?

    No, you will not need a telephone. Land-line telephone service is not provided in any residence hall rooms, suites or apartments.

  8. Can I call long distance or accept collect calls?

    You can call long distance provided you have a calling card from a long distance carrier.

  9. How do I get a private room? (Traditional Halls)

    After the freeze period, at the beginning of each semester, there may be space available for a person to have a private room. Requests for a private room may be made with your hall staff. If space is available, you will be asked to fill out a private room agreement. Once the private room agreement is signed, you will be billed the prorated charge for the private room.   10. If I cancel, will I get a refund?

    The application fee is non-refundable.

  11. Can I have an overnight guest in my room?

    VISITORS OF THE SAME SEX (Traditional Residence Halls ONLY)
    Overnight visitors are discouraged during weekday nights and prohibited during the last week of each semester when final examinations are being given. The maximum length of any visit is two consecutive nights with extensions granted only by the Residence Director. The guest must check-in with the Residence Director upon arrival and check-out with the Residence Director at departure. More information may be obtained through the Residence Hall Handbook.
    OVERNIGHT VISITORS OF THE OPPOSITE SEX ARE PROHIBITED.

  12. Can I have a microwave in my room?

    Microwave ovens are not allowed in individual residence hall rooms. However, microwave ovens have been purchased and are available for residents' occasional use for snacks in the common kitchen area in each residence hall. The microwaves are for snack items only and are not intended to supplement a meal plan.

  13. Can I have a refrigerator?

    Students may bring small personal refrigerators. The maximum allowable size for any refrigerator unit is 3.5 cubic feet capacity and it can't draw more then 1.5 running amps.

  14. What do I need to bring with me?

    You will need to bring linens for a twin bed, pillows, blankets, towels, wastebaskets, an alarm clock, cleaning supplies and toiletries, laundry basket and supplies, iron, desk lamp and hangers. More information on specific student housing.

  15. Do the rooms have air conditioning?

    All the rooms have air conditioning.

  16. How do I pay for housing and dining? Can I pay in installments?

    You can pay by cash, check, Visa or MasterCard. Two options are available for students to pay their fees. One option is for the student to pay everything all at once during registration.

  17. Can I use a computer in my room?

    Yes you may have a computer in your room. The entire campus has Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi computer adapters are available in the bookstore if you need one.

  18. How do students receive mail?

    Each residing student is required to purchase a mailbox at the Campus Mail Center. The fee is $9.00 per year. Students should make sure their mail is addressed as follows:

  19. Are there laundry facilities in the residence halls?

    Laundry facilities are available in ALL residence halls.

  20. What type of security is available in the residence halls?

    Each residence hall has a Residence Hall Director and Residence Assistants who provide security coverage of their perspective residence halls from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. From 11 p.m. to 8 a.m., University Building Attendants and Police Officers make security rounds throughout the buildings. To provide our students with a safe environment on campus, each residence hall features a keyless-entry system, which prevents unauthorized persons from entering the residence halls.
