Family Education & Privacy Act

At Savannah State University the educational records of students, the confidential financial statements of parents, and confidential recommendations for employment and student admission are protected by the provisions of the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

Annually Savannah State University informs students of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, with which Savannah State is in full compliance. This Act was designed to protect the privacy of educational records, to establish the right of students to inspect and review their educational records, and to provide guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleading data through informal and formal hearings.

The policy and procedures used by Savannah State University for compliance with the provisions of the Act are explained in detail in the Savannah State University Policy and Procedure Manual. This document also provides a directory of the educational records maintained on students by Savannah State University. A copy of this manual may be examined in any major office of Savannah State. Questions concerning the Act may be referred to the Registrar. After a student has observed Savannah State procedures for challenging the record, he/she has the right to file complaints with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act office of alleged failures of Savannah State University to comply with the Act.
