STRIPES Program

The SSU Tigers Representing Intellectual Preparedness and Excellence in Service (S.T.R.I.P.E.S.) Program connects classroom learning with real-world impact by encouraging student engagement through leadership development, extracurricular involvement and community service. Through the program, students can document and track their participation while building the skills, experiences and connections needed to lead on campus, in their communities and beyond.

Learning Through Leadership & Service

The S.T.R.I.P.E.S. Program focuses on two key areas of student engagement: personal and professional leadership seminars and volunteer community service. By promoting participation in campus programs, events and service opportunities, S.T.R.I.P.E.S. provides meaningful experiential learning that supports student growth and development.

Developing Leaders for Life

Participation in the program helps prepare students to become engaged citizens, effective leaders and competitive professionals while making a positive impact on the Savannah State University campus and the communities we serve. These experiences foster personal growth, strengthen professional skills and encourage a lifelong commitment to service.

Community Service

SSU Students document and submit their volunteer community service activities to the STRIPES Office located in the Career Services & Leadership Development Center (Student Union 115) and receive a transcript of their activities while enrolled.

Use the STRIPES Community Service Certification Forms to document your community service. The form must be typed and updated completely providing all of the requested information. Supervisors and students must sign all applicable signature lines on each sheet and provide all requested information. The supervisor must sign next to each date on the timesheet to verify accuracy. Only completed forms may be submitted to update the student’s STRIPES account.

Students may submit STRIPES Community Service engagement starting from the freshman year through graduation.

Guidelines for qualifying volunteer community services activities:

STRIPES countable community service includes volunteer activities that are design to uplift or enhance the campus or off campus community.
Countable STRIPES service can not be part of paid activities or credited towards a mandatory disciplinary sanction.
Countable activities can not include work done as part of a church mission or committee. However, volunteering independently at a church or church event may be considered when it is not a part of an existing church commitment.
Class Service Learning Projects can be submitted for STRIPES community service. Unpaid internships with a nonprofit, education, or public service agency or program can be submitted as STRIPES community service.
Countable actives can not include volunteering at a for profit business in lieu of payment.
Countable actives can not be supervised by a member of the student’s immediate family or their parent’s immediate family.
Students are encouraged to commit to a specific organization or agency where they can provide a long term impact towards a specific cause.
STRIPES community service can be documented from the start of the student’s enrollment at SSU; STRIPES participation is open to all enrolled SSU.

Leadership Education & Academic Development (LEAD) Seminars

LEAD seminars provide student an opportunity to participate in extracurricular learning in the areas of:

Professional and Career Readiness
Personal Growth
Academic Excellence
Wellness & Fitness
Leadership Development

STRIPES Seminars credits are recorded in the student’s STRIPES account for one (1) season which lasts from March 1 through February 29 each school year.

STRIPES STATUS – Active (3 seminars, 10 hrs, Earn Your STRIPES (6 seminars, 50hrs), STRIPES Society (25 seminars, 150hrs)

STRIPES Transcript

Students may request a transcript of their STRIPES participation by sending an email to [email protected] from their SSU Student Email including their name and Student ID Number.
