Biography

Clougherty brings fifteen years of experience as an educator and administrator in community organizations, K-12 public, charter and independent schools, and colleges/universities. Clougherty shares a passion for promoting civic engagement and social consciousnesses in schools and communities across the globe. She has a particular interest in collaborative and interdisciplinary potential of service-learning, the role that arts and creative process plays in community engagement, the pedagogy of service-learning and teaching of empathy as well as expanding the scope of domestic service-learning programs to include a global focus. Her honors include recognition as a National Emerging Scholar for K-12 Service-Learning Research (2008 and 2009) by the National Service-Learning Partnership at the Academy for Educational Development. Christen completed her doctoral research on the synthesis of experiential education, service-learning, creative-process theory, and global citizenship education. Clougherty founded the Nobis Project, a non-profit organization that supports youth, educational and community leaders in building skills to analyze issues that impact our society in taking actions towards initiating positive change. Clougherty is a founding board member of Susie King Taylor Community School, a place-based, peaceful school; founding board member of Tybee Island Maritime Academy, a project-based charter school; and founding member of the Arts Resource Collective of Savannah, an organization that supports the financial and creative viability of artists in Savannah.

Quakerism, experiential education, creative process theory, civic engagement, community engagement, global citizenship education, service-learning, Friends school education, culturally responsive teaching, global poverty, social justice, and youth empowerment.
