WELCOME and thank you for visiting our page. We hope that you will find this site to be informative as you research the dance program. Our program is the only of its kind in southern Georgia. Here at Savannah State University, we offer the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual and Performing Arts with a concentration in Dance. This degree provides a unique interdisciplinary approach to learning. We offer offer high quality instruction and exposure to professional dance opportunities including performance, choreography and teaching.

Our students exhibit Tiger Pride demonstrating tradition in their African roots, culture, professionalism and creativity in their many innovative performances and exhibitions, on campus, in the community and internationally!  Our faculty is talented, diverse, and dedicated to the creative, technical and professional development of our young artists. The curriculum is rigorous and supports our students to envision and attain their professional and artistic goals.

Obsidian Dance Repertory

Obsidian is the departmental dance ensemble for the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Wellness and a student organization at SSU.  Students audition to be a member of the organization and participate in pre-professional dance opportunities such as main stage seasonal concerts, regional and international travel, community performances, recruitment events representing exceptional talent as SSU cultural ambassadors. The ensemble is a cross disciplinary company specializing in contemporary, jazz, modern, ballet, hip hop, African, improvisation, and bucking.  Members also learn skills in leadership among peers, mentorship high school students and teaching during workshops.  The company is available for your private events and public performances. Facilities

The Visual and Performing Arts Program at Savannah State University occupies two buildings on the northwest and northeast corners of campus. The primary location is the J. F. Kennedy Fine Arts Building which houses classrooms, rehearsal and practice facilities, laboratory spaces, and faculty offices. The centerpiece is the Kennedy Fine Arts Theater. This 200-seat concert auditorium is complete with theatrical lighting, amplification system, and a projector for multimedia performances. Other performance and laboratory facilities include the Recital Hall, Choir Rehearsal Hall, Music Production Lab, and Computer Lab completely furnished with Macintosh desktops. Students and faculty also have access to the Black Box Theater located in the Wilcox-Wiley Gym. The Black Box Theater is an ideal intimate space for performances.
