The Department of English, Languages, and Cultures offers a dynamic, student-centered bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature that prepares graduates for a variety of careers while enriching the whole person and providing awareness of our local and global community.

By exploring literature, creative and professional writing, and world literature and cultures, our English degree provides a strong liberal arts foundation rooted in the Africana traditions that serves graduates in a variety of career fields and opportunities for further professional and graduate study. Our program faculty engage learners in a high level of scholarly and creative work to help students develop critical and creative thinking, communication skills, and to foster a desire for life-long learning, self-efficacy, and civic involvement.

Through high-quality instruction in an array of traditional and emerging disciplines, the Department of English, Languages, and Cultures enhances the intellectual and creative capacities of all students while nurturing them as future leaders and professionals well-prepared to meet the needs of a changing world. By providing innovative learning experiences within and beyond the classroom, the department encourages intellectual curiosity, global engagement, ethical responsibility, personal and social awareness, and creative expression.

Certificate in Professional Writing

Beginning Fall 2022, the Department of English, Languages, and Literature will offer a certificate program in Professional Writing. Writing is one of the most important and valued skills graduating students must have to be successful in seeking employment post-graduation. This certificate program in professional writing provides a certification in this employer-valued skill and can serve students across the university. As a 15-hour program, it can function as “coursework in lieu of a minor” for many students. This certificate may also be of interest to workers looking for an additional skill-set to help their career advancement.
