Dance Concentration

Our dance concentration is the only of its kind in the coastal empire. Savannah State University offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual and Performing Arts with concentrations in dance and theatre. This degree provides a unique interdisciplinary approach to learning. We offer high quality instruction and exposure to professional dance opportunities including performance, choreography, and teaching.

Our students exhibit professionalism and creativity in their many innovative performances and exhibitions, on campus, in the community and internationally. Savannah State's faculty is talented, diverse, and dedicated to the creative, technical and professional development of our young artists. The curriculum is rigorous and supports our students to envision and attain their professional and artistic goals.

Obsidian Dance Repertory

Obsidian is the departmental dance ensemble for the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Wellness and a student organization at SSU. Students audition to be a member of the organization and participate in pre-professional dance opportunities such as main stage seasonal concerts, regional and international travel, community performances, recruitment events representing exceptional talent as SSU cultural ambassadors.

The ensemble is a cross disciplinary company specializing in contemporary, jazz, modern, ballet, hip hop, African, improvisation, and bucking. Members also learn skills in leadership among peers, mentorship to high school students and teaching during workshops. The company is available for your private events and public performances. Theatre Concentration

We offer the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual and Performing Arts with a concentration in Theatre. This degree provides a unique interdisciplinary approach to learning. We offer high quality instruction and exposure to professional theatre opportunities including performance, and directing.

Players by the Sea

Players by the Sea is the official Savannah State University Theater Group. This is a student organization connected to the theatre discipline with a focus of strengthening the academic program by providing creative and artistic theatrical opportunities. This group is for members who assist in the Theatre program (majors, actors, members, community service) while our new page SSU Players by the Sea Box Office will be designated for patrons and will include all publicity information.

The Visual and Performing Arts BFA provides an interdisciplinary approach to the arts where concentrations can enroll in courses in other disciplines in the arts to enhance their studies. Some courses that offer a unique perspective on the Performing Arts are:

The Visual and Performing Arts Program at Savannah State University occupies two buildings on the northwest and northeast corners of campus. The primary location is the J.F. Kennedy Fine Arts Center which houses large spacious studios, rehearsal and practice facilities, and faculty offices.

Students and faculty also have access to the Black Box Theater and Dance Studios located in the Wilcox-Wiley Gym. The Black Box Theater is an ideal intimate space for performances. Here is a listing of the Theatre and Dance Facilities:
