Gamma Upsilon Chapter History


  In 1949 on the Day of November 26 Soror Mattie Payne and Soror Mayme Williams (regional director at that time) selected seven young women to start the Gamma Upsilon chapter of what was known as Georgia State College (now Savannah State University). On a 3-point scale , one candidate had a cumulative grade point average of 2.9 and two candidates had an average of 2.7. The chartered members were Jessie Collier Deloach, Helen Dilworth, Marie Farley, Jewell Gamble, Sunomia Lewis, Dorothy McIver and Dorothy Singleton.

*Soror Jessie Deloach is still very much active in the Savannah graduate chapter Gamma Sigma Omega.
