A team of five Savannah State University (SSU) business and engineering students placed second at the 2011 Opportunity Funding Corporation’s (OFC) Venture Challenge National Business Plan Competition held April 14-17. More than 300 students on 21 teams either from historically or predominantly Black colleges took part in the national competition, which is held annually in Atlanta. The OFC Venture Challenge Program focuses on improving the entrepreneurship curriculum at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and allows students to hone the skills necessary to grow a venture successfully. The Business Plan Competition required students to conceive a business idea; develop a full business plan complete with operating, financial and manufacturing components; make a 15-minute presentation to judges followed by 15 minutes of questions. The SSU team developed a venture called PlumBco, a company that assembles and sells a tilt-sensor device that improves the accuracy in measurements of differential leveling surveys.
The SSU team included Mr. John Hudson, a junior marketing major from Marietta, Ga.; Ms. Vonnetta Epps, an MBA student from LaGrange, Ga.; Ms. Ericka Williams, a junior accounting major from Savannah, Ga.; Ms. Rachel Raines, a junior marketing major from Alpharetta, Ga.; and Mr. Jeff Kesling, a senior engineering technology major from Savannah, Ga. Also on hand for the competition were members of next year’s team: Mr. Antonio Polite, a sophomore marketing major from Beaufort, S.C.; Mr. Jonathan Hall, a junior political science major from Albany, Ga.; and Ms. Sakina Middleton, a junior accounting major from Savannah, Ga.
The team was advised by Ms. Shalonda K. Bradford, a business management lecturer in the College of Business Administration, and Mr. Mohamad Mustafa, Ph.D., coordinator of the Civil Engineering Technology program in the College of Sciences and Technology.
The National Urban League held its annual Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP) Conference on June 8-11, 2011 in Orlando, FL. Dr. Keenya Mosley, former Coordinator of Placement and Special Projects in COBA accompanied students to the event.
